Hi, my name is Jayson Wilkinson and I am in charge of a group of boys at my church in Cedar Park Texas. A few months ago, the 16 to 18 year old guys that I work with wanted to do a video night for an activity with all of the youth in our congregation. As a professional videographer, I thought this would be fun. They had the idea that we should do something based on a pamphlet our church puts out called, "For the Strength of Youth" and that our group would take "Modesty".
The idea they had was to come up with a rap that talked about Modesty. The next step was to come up with some sort of song. We settled on something based on the Beasty Boys. The irony of doing a modesty video based on something from the Beasty Boys was just too good to pass up even though most of the kids didn't really get it.
We wrote the lyrics and made the video. The amazing thing that this did was to inspire all of these boys to actually believe the things they were rapping about. In addition, they all became better friends through the making of this.
Afterwords, I realized that there is power in making something that is fun to watch that also presents our values in a way that is interesting.
